Apart from the capital city - Nicosia/Lefkosia - the island has three main towns: the port town of Gazimagusa (Famagusta) on the east coast, and the resort town of Girne (Kyrenia) in the north. The third major centre is Guzelyurt (Morphou). which is to the west and is the traditional centre of the citrus industry.
Kyrenia/Girne: is considered to be the tourist capital of Turkish Cyprus. It is one of the leading resorts in the Mediterranean and offers beaches, night-life, shopping and a large range of restaurants. Everyone can enjoy the splendid views of Kyrenia that are revealed as the crest the ridge on the highway from Lefkosia. Kyrenia is famous for its horseshoe shaped harbour guarded by the mediaeval Girne Castle and the old carob warehouses which line the wharves. Most of these have been converted into bars and restaurants, and this is one of the most popular places to spend an evening.
Famagusta/Gazimagusa: was historically the capital of Cyprus. It is centred on the old crusader built walled town, which is itself built on the ruins of the ancient city of Arseon. Which replaced the city of Salamis. The city and the areas around it are rich with the ruins of ancient and medieval civilisations. Famagusta, is very close to the now derelict city of Varosha, which was pre-1974 Cyprus' tourist jewel. The are many new development, beaches and resorts to the north of the city.
Moving to the west we get to Morphou/Güzelyurt. The town is surrounded by enormous citrus orchards, which made the area the biggest fruit supplier on the island. Guzelyurt is said to have been founded by the Spartans, who also introduced the worship of Aphrodite to the island.
Iskele and Dipkarpaz also attention. The Iskele region, in the north east, is one of the most beautiful parts of Northern Cyprus. The most popular destination in the Iskele region is the Karpaz Peninsula. Dipkarpaz is the biggest town on the Karpaz. The soil around the town is very fertile, and local crops include carob, cotton, tobacco, and wheat. A tobacco factory operates in the town.
