Representative Offices / Foreign Diplomatic Missions in TRNC

The TRNC is only recognised as a state only by Turkey. The rest of the world doesn't recognise North Cyprus as a sovereign nation, although some nations maintain official and unofficial contacts with the TRNC.

Since the referendum on the Annan Plan in 2004, there have been some significant changes in the TRNC's international relations of the TRNC:

• The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) granted the TRNC the status of a 'constituent state' which means Turkish Cyprus has become an observer member of the OIC.
• In 2005 the OIC has passed various resolutions calling upon all states to do more to ease the international restrictions imposed upon Northern Cyprus, and to open direct links with the TRNC.
• Delegations from foreign governments (including US congressmen and British MPs) have visited North Cyprus and discussed the possibility of closer economic and cultural interaction with the TRNC government.
• The Republic of Cyprus has weakened the embargo placed on the TRNC.

The TRNC has contact with international community, and the United Nations Organisation, via its Representative Offices in different countries. These missions have no formal diplomatic status, but serve as de facto embassies and consulates.

As far as Foreign Diplomatic Missions in the TRNC are concerned, at the moment, only Turkey maintains a formal embassy on the territory of the TRNC.  In Nicosia, both the British High Commission to Cyprus is accessible from the North.  Some countries like Australia and Russia have offices for their citizens in the TRNC.
